|NARH and Berkshire Surgical Associates partner to expand surgical services|

(June 20, 2013) Northern Berkshire Healthcare and Berkshire Surgical Associates have announced an expansion of surgical services in North Berkshire. Timothy Jones, president and CEO of NBH, and Eugene Curletti, MD, president of Berkshire Surgical Associates, said the partnership will bring two general surgeons to North Adams Regional Hospital beginning July 3. Jose M. Heisecke, MD and Christian R. Galvez, MD will join Louis Reines, MD, to provide surgical services at NARH.
“This collaboration gives NARH greater capacity to meet the healthcare needs of the community here at home,” said Jones. “Partnerships like this one will be the future of healthcare delivery as we seek greater access for patients, ever-improving quality, and efficient use of resources.”
“We’re very excited about providing our experienced care closer to where patient live,” said Dr. Curletti. “We can’t wait to see patients in North Adams.”
Dr. Heisecke was born in Texas, but raised in Paraguay. After graduating Medical School in 1997, he moved back to Texas to continue his training in family medicine. Dr Heisecke then completed his residency in general surgery at Berkshire Medical Center. He joined Berkshire Surgical Associates in 2008. Dr. Heisecke has expertise in minimally invasive general surgery, as well as vascular, gastrointestinal and breast surgery, and also performs colonoscopy services. He speaks Spanish, English, and Portuguese fluently. He lives in Pittsfield with his wife, Christina, and their six children. He enjoys spending time with his family and playing soccer, which he did professionally while living in Paraguay.
Dr. Galvez is a native of Guatemala, Central America. He received his medical degree from Francisco Marroquin University Medical School in Guatemala City and completed his residency in general surgery at Berkshire Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. He joined Berkshire Surgical Associates in 2011. Dr Galvez has expertise in minimally invasive general surgery as well as vascular, thoracic and breast surgery. He is fluent in English, Spanish and German. Dr. Galvez enjoys photography, swimming, and motorcycle mechanics. He is also a volunteer surgeon at Hermano Pedro Hospital in Guatemala, going on surgical missions yearly. He lives in Lanesboro with his wife, Amy, and three young children.
Dr. Heisecke and Dr. Galvez will join Dr. Louis Reines to provide an expanded range of surgical services at NARH. Dr Reines is a general and colorectal surgeon who has practiced at NARH since 2011. He earned his medical degree and a master’s degree in health management from Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Reines completed his residency in general surgery at the University of Connecticut and his fellowship in colorectal surgery at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. His areas of expertise include laparoscopic colectomy, complex ano-rectal surgery and colonoscopy.
Berkshire Surgical Associates traces its roots to professional collaborations in the Berkshires dating to the 1970s. Today the practice includes eight surgeons now practicing in three locations in Pittsfield, Great Barrington and North Adams with specialties that include vascular, thoracic, bariatric, endocrine, surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery, wound care and the treatment of vein disease.
