NARH wins $500,000 technology grant
Jun 13, 2010

(June 11, 2010) North Adams Regional Hospital has been awarded $500,000 from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services. The money is designated to further develop the hospital’s information technology infrastructure in order to improve patient safety, quality of care, and the efficient integration of healthcare service delivery throughout Northern Berkshire County.

The grant, entitled a “Healthcare Infrastructure and Capacity Building Grant,” is one of the largest awarded by the state.

Northern Berkshire Healthcare is a recognized leader in the adoption and use of advanced health information technology, including the implementation of the first community-wide shared e-Health summary record in the country. This funding specifically will help to further the use, adoption, and integration of the acute care electronic medical record in a manner consistent with the community-wide shared e-Health summary record.

Specifically, the grant will help to advance North Adams Regional Hospital’s clinical automation plans for the implementation of Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) enabling the reduction of medical errors, and improved health care quality and efficiency.  It will also help the hospital achieve the State of Massachusetts’ requirement for CPOE implementation by 2012, and make progress toward meeting national criteria for the adoption and use of electronic medical records as established by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act HITECH Act legislation.
